  17. <p>     Pity the Soviet visitor to the U.S. who is unbriefed on
  18. local customs. But Panorama, a Moscow newspaper, offers these
  19. pointers:

  21. <p>-- Never refuse anything. Americans offer gifts only once,
  22. so modesty is a mistake.
  23. </p>
  24. <p>-- There is no such thing as exploitation. If you help
  25. someone with odd jobs, pocket any pay tendered--you might earn
  26. the equivalent of a year's salary in rubles after just a few
  27. days.
  28. </p>
  29. <p>-- If a broken VCR or answering machine is available, grab
  30. it. Soviet customs agents won't tax defective luxury items.
  31. </p>
  32. <p>-- Don't feel ashamed of your English. Many Americans have
  33. trouble speaking it properly themselves.
